For the past year, we have been thinking of renovating our back deck. We love having an outdoor space, but the old deck looked ugly, required maintenance (yearly staining), had sap that was seeping through the boards and sticking to the dogs fur, and had a ridiculously steep staircase. We have been wanting a larger area to enjoy with our family and friends, so this past season we set aside some money to pay for the renovations. Chris had done a lot of research on Trex (composite decking materials). Trex materials look amazing, are maintenance free, have a 25 year warranty and are environmentally friendly, so we decided to use them in the new renovation.
Here is the old deck
We started the project the last week of April. Chris Kyle, our general contractor, and his crew started by taking down the steep staircase. Then they laid down the form for the concrete (we extended the patio under the deck) and dug the footings for the posts.
Once we passed the inspection for the footings, they poured the concrete, tore down the old deck, and put in the posts for the new deck. Then they began building the foundation for the new deck layout. The doggies didn't like living without their deck, but they did enjoy having the guys around.
Once the foundation was built with regular wood, it was covered with Trex.
After about 6 weeks of living with our backyard in a construction zone, we passed our final inspection, and the deck is complete!!
The total square footage of the deck is about 440. The stairs go down to a landing that turns back onto the patio.
The underneath of the deck is covered with dry below (a drainage system that keeps the patio from getting wet when it rains).
The stairs have lights on the kick plates that illuminate the stairs at night. There are also lights on the top of all the posts on the stairs, the landing, and the main deck area. They give off a great ambiance at night. We have them on a timer that comes on automatically at dark and stays on for a few hours before turning off.
Here is the landing. You can see the pattern that we used on the main deck. We chose a lighter Spiced Rum color with a darker border in Vintage Lantern. The handrails are also Vintage Lantern. The type of Trex we used is called Transcend. It looks like real wood and has a scratch resistant coating on it. You can see the wood look on the handrail. We also chose to use black spindles, which look amazing!!
On top of the deck, we placed our grill, our dining table and chairs and a new seating area with a fire pit. Chris found a great deal on the sectional at Ohana Furniture online, and the fire pit he found on Amazon.
It took several weeks, but it was worth it because we absolutely love our new deck!! The boys love it too! It's been a little too hot out during the day (especially for my prego self), but the evenings have been nice for grilling and eating outside. I know that we will definitely enjoy this for many years!!

OMG I love the new deck!
